Another winter storm went through today and I’m reminded of a set of storms we had a few years ago in February of that year. Starting at the beginning of February we got a huge dump of snow three weekends in a row, which of course meant we had to figure out where to put all this snow when we moved it. Back then we didn’t have a snowblower so we had to move all this snow by hand.

The first real dump that year was the first weekend in February. From Saturday night to Sunday morning we got 1 1/2 feet of snow. It was awesome! Everything was so nice and fresh and clean it was beautiful. It took a few hours to clean our yard out, our driveway is over 100 feet long, but it was fairly warm so it was all good. And of course we were out on our sleds (snow machines) that day for sure, playing in the fresh powder.

The next weekend we got another 2 feet of snow from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning. Hubby was working that weekend so it was up to the kids to clean out the yard. They grumbled at first but then they came up with a plan. In their infinite teenage wisdom they decided they would use the sleds to clean the yard so they could take the snow completely away, leaving room for more.

The Great White North?

It seems the winter of 2011/12 is going to keep us northerners guessing. It’s just after midnight and my lawn is greener now than it was for our very dry summer. Oh it’s cold out there, feeling like a frosty -25C with the wind. Normally we, at least our household, like to go and play in the powder over the holidays. We dawn our toasty warm skidoo suits, big boots, and big mitts and venture into those frosty out-of-doors.

Where is all the snow?ย  It’s down south. Texas and New Mexico seem to be hogging it this year for some odd reason. I always thought that the folks down there we none to keen on the white stuff that we love to enjoy. Our weather forecast for tonight says we are experiencing ‘light snow’. Well I can tell you it’s very very light. On my way home tonight I counted 10 snowflakes in my headlights in a 10 mile stretch of highway. That’s only 1 snowflake per mile! The weather man also says we should get a little bit of the ellusive white stuff over the next week, and I do mean a little bit. Maybe, just maybe we’ll get about 1 inch over the week. But (notice the bold but) we’ve had smatterings of snow since mid September, and I say again, my lawn is green.

Will the great white north be white for Christmas? I’m starting to think not. ย I think we’re going to need a little help if we’re going to wake up to a nice fresh blanket of snow Christmas morning, which makes everything look cheery and bright, and it’s just not the same without it. Does anyone know a snow dance?

Keep your fingers crossed! I know I will. ๐Ÿ™‚

It seems that we here in the north had to wait for December to arrive for winter to show it’s frosty face. Sure we had a taste of snow in September and a wee bit in October, but for the most part it’s been cold and raining, by cold I mean just warm enough to rain. As of midnight on Nov. 30th we’ve had snow, and now two days later we have the cold, the winter kind.

The ground has a white blanket to insulate it from the frosty temperatures outside, which by morning will be close to -20C, and the fire is roaring to keep me warm and snuggly. My dogs are, of course, curled up in the snow and will soon disappear under that white blanket, leaving only two lumps as evidence of their presence. Me? I’ll be heading down to snuggle by that roaring fire with a good book (The Charmer by Autumn Dawn) and a glass of chilled wine. Ahhh the cold nights of winter, ya gotta love them. ๐Ÿ™‚

Stay warm folks, winter has only just begun.

PS..Do you think we’ll have enough snow by Christmas to have a sledding party, or at least by New Years?

UPDATE…Dec 4th/11

Well it looks like I was wrong. Winter is gone again, washed away in a fresh batch of rain, rain and more rain. It’s pretty bad when us northerners are wishing for snow just to get away from the rain. LET IT SNOW…LET IT SNOW…LET IT SNOW!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hiya,

I’ve never done this before so I’m figuring ย it out as I go. Hopefully it won’t take long for me to get the hang of this thing.

It’s supposed to start snowing tonight, I’m not sure how much we’re supposed to get but it’s looking to be a good night to snuggle by the fire with a good book.

Have a great evening,

Karen
